A scene is a microcosm of the play,
a key piece of a puzzle that contains the critical intentions
and themes of a written work. Why is scene study so
important? A well crafted scene is the central force of this
art form. Scene study gives you the opportunity to work on
all the essential elements of the acting process in a
contained and concentrated way.
The beauty of this creative process is the coming together of the
actors, director and author from different
training and backgrounds, in a collaborative effort in order
to bring the authors intention to life. It is why people come
to see plays and films.
In my NYC acting workshop, you will practice the craft of
scene work at the highest artistic level that you are capable
of, which will allow you to work in all the varied mediums of
the profession. This includes learning how to:
Approach the
scene (first steps)
Analyze the
text (What is the author's intention)
Break down the
material into beats
Listen and
react honestly
Make strong choices
to "raise the stakes"
Behave truthfully
in the moment with the other actor
Personalize the
text and circumstances
Articulate and
work from the specific circumstance of the scene (who, what,
why, where, when)
Improvise the scene
to explore the depths of the characters world
Capture the
style and tone of the play
Create the
world that the character lives in
Select suitable
scenes that work for you
Rehearse
professionally
